Continuing with my favorite music series, I decided to skip the 90s altogether because I've never really listened to a ton of 90s music. To be honest, I'm more of an oldies music fan, and while I do have a few songs I like from the 90s, nothing really stands out enough to write a post about it. That being said, 80s music is one of my favorite eras of music, particularly New Wave, and I probably have to partially blame my mom since she loves 80s music as well and listens to a lot of it. While I do have groups I really like from the 80s such as Blondie, Hall and Oates, and Eurythmics, a lot of my favorite songs from the 80s are one hit wonders (either that, or I haven't gotten around to listening to their other songs). I find that a lot of my jams are 80s songs; they just make me feel happy and want to dance and rock out to them. I had such a difficult time choosing only a few songs to share, but any time I hear these songs playing I absolutely have to dance and sing to them. Unfortunately due to licensing, the videos won't play on my blog, so you have to click through to watch on Youtube, but they're well worth it if you're interested in hearing some iconic 80s songs.
1) Come On Eileen-Dexys Midnight Runners
I definitely grew up listening to this song since my mom had it on a CD, it's such a feel-good song and makes me want to break out dancing. I'll admit though I never knew what the lyrics were until I played the song on Just Dance; seriously though, the lyrics were always undecipherable. You can imagine my excitement when they played this song during the dance scene in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which by the way is an amazing film. Although they cut out parts of the song, it still maintains most of it core themes. Check out part of the song in this clip from the film below. As Sam says, "Oh my God they're playing GOOD music!"
2) Take On Me-A-Ha
Another one of my all-time favorite jams, and consequently another Just Dance song. The music video is one of my favorites, it's so awesomely 80s!
3) Don't You Want Me-The Human League
Out of all the songs on this list, this is probably the one I sing the most. I don't know why, but I'm always randomly getting the tune stuck in my head, and consequently singing about "working as a waitress in a cocktail bar." Great, now that I'm writing about it, it's stuck in my head once again.
4) Africa-Toto
Another one of those songs I grew up listening to, this time on my mom's videocassette tape of 80s music, you know, back when cars only played tapes instead of CDs. If I had a stronger voice, I could probably belt out the chorus more often and a lot better.
5) Hold Me Now-Thompson Twins
A more recent favorite, I forgot where I first heard this song but it must have been in public somewhere.
6) Bizarre Love Triangle-New Order
Another recent favorite, they play a remix version of this at Forever 21 a lot, because apparently every time I'm there they play it. It's ridiculously awesome.
What are some of your favorite 80s songs?
